From The Dean
This issue of The Journal continues our exploration of what sets this Law School apart—our people, our values, and the strength of our interconnected community—while highlighting the programs, partnerships, and philanthropic support that sustain our mission and enrich the student experience.
Over the past year, our faculty have shaped critical conversations in law and policy—from the future of artificial intelligence to access to justice. Our investment in experiential learning has deepened through our clinics and centers, where students work directly with clients, courts, and communities.
The newly launched Justice Lab clinic, led by Practice Professor Colleen Shanahan, embodies our commitment to combining rigorous legal training with meaningful social impact. Programs such as Justice Lab and the International Strategic Crisis Negotiation Exercise (ISCNE) show how students translate theory into practice—preparing them to lead with clarity, compassion, and purpose.
We celebrate the achievements of our alumni, including four graduates who will clerk for the United States Supreme Court within a single academic cycle—the first time in our history. Cal Barnett-Mayotte L’22 and Bethany Lee L’22 are clerking in the current term with Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and Justice Samuel Alito, respectively; Miles Gray L’24 will clerk for Justice Elena Kagan in October Term (OT)’26; and Lavi Ben Dor L’20 will clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas in OT’27.
We also recognize the accomplishments of our distinguished faculty, including Professors Tess Wilkinson-Ryan L’05, G’06, PhD’08; Elizabeth Pollman; and Dorothy Roberts. Penn Carey Law continues to be a hub of influential scholarship, with seven faculty members listed among the Top 100 Legal Scholars of 2024, the most of any law school.
Finally, we remember and honor the lives of Alyssa Anzalone-Newman L’16, Sarah Best L’21, and Lee Rosengard L’76, a longtime lecturer in the Master in Law Program.
This issue also highlights how our alumni community stays engaged with the Law School. Through mentorship, volunteer service, and support for students at every stage, alumni are vital to shaping the Penn Carey Law experience.
Alongside these stories of impact and leadership, this issue includes our Annual Giving list of donors. We are grateful to the alumni and friends whose generosity sustains scholarships, faculty research, and the immersive learning opportunities that define our approach to legal education. Your support ensures future generations of lawyers are prepared to serve their communities with insight, integrity, and dedication.
To all who give of your time, talent, and resources—thank you. Your partnership strengthens our community and extends the reach of Penn Carey Law worldwide.
With warm regards,
