ast April, I received the honor of a lifetime when I was named Dean of the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. I am profoundly grateful and enormously excited for the opportunity to lead one of the top law schools in the country.

As a member of the faculty over the past 14 years, I’ve become intimately acquainted with our esteemed institution. My commitment to Penn Carey Law’s success runs deep and I look forward to shaping the Law School during a new era that is ripe with possibility.

This inaugural column explores what truly sets this Law School apart—our people and vibrant community. Often described as the collegial law school, our modest size fosters close bonds among faculty, students, and staff, creating a dynamic environment in which respect drives creativity and innovation. This interconnected community is a hallmark of Penn Carey Law, shaping an intellectually stimulating atmosphere dedicated to legal excellence.

Our faculty, who are among the finest in the nation, are accomplished scholars and exceptional teachers. Their brilliance extends beyond the walls of Penn Carey Law, where their impactful scholarship alters the legal landscape, as highlighted in subsequent pages.

Our students, recognized for their engagement, intellectual curiosity, collegiality, and leadership, embody the lively intellectual environment we have cultivated. The following pages use their voices to delve into experiences of academic excellence that are broadly accessible, innovative, and interdisciplinary. With 70 student groups, 9 journals, and 30 student-run pro bono organizations on campus, our students have a range of opportunities for impactful service and leadership available to them.

Finally, I know that our alumni, the distinguished audience of this magazine, navigate an increasingly complex world as leaders and influential decision-makers in the law and related fields, such as government, business, nonprofits, and the arts. This edition features valued alumni who push the boundaries of innovation and demonstrate an unwavering dedication to pro bono service. These are just some of the ways you realize the promise of Penn Carey Law and inspire those following in your footsteps.

Additionally, we feature insights from graduates of our Master in Law program, commemorating its tenth anniversary this year. A pioneering initiative among top-ranked law schools, this program exemplifies our commitment to innovative education. Tailored for accomplished professionals and students outside the legal field, it allows them to immerse in intensive legal studies even as they bring novel perspectives to Law School classrooms. Ten years in, the ML program is proud to bridge crucial knowledge gaps and propel its students’ success across various industries and academic pursuits.

The Penn Carey Law community is the heartbeat of our institution, shaping both our present and future. I warmly invite you to stay connected as we bridge our cherished history and the exciting innovations ahead. Each narrative in this edition helps convey the rich tapestry of Penn Carey Law. Your continued support is integral to our shared journey. I appreciate the opportunity for continued connection with you and appreciate your vital role as we shape this next chapter in the Law School’s story.
